New EDGE for Design Professionals

September 12, 2011

VICTORIA, VANCOUVER – This summer, a new architectural specification consulting firm, EDGE, starts operations in southwestern British Columbia. Owner and founder Gaston Castaño Maibc is a LEED™ Accredited Professional and a member of Architecture Canada | Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) and the BC Sustainable Energy Association.

The name EDGE recognizes the firm’s goal to provide a competitive edge to design practices that want to add value to their project deliverables. “Our firm enables design professionals to realize their design concept and technical requirements by producing high-quality architectural specifications,” says founder Gaston Castaño.

Contracting the services out to an architectural specification consultant will provide a competitive edge to architects when project team members:

  • do not have the time to do a first-rate job themselves;
  • do not have the special expertise required for a particular item, system, or installation;
  • have had problems in the past with specifications prepared by their team.

Another important aspect of outsourcing specification writing is enabling small design teams to focus their time on construction drawing production and coordination, thus allowing for tighter project tender deadlines.

Mr. Castaño has a track record of successful collaborative design excellence. Since 1997, he has taken on different roles within the architecture/engineering/construction sector, including architectural drafter, model maker, 3D rendering technologist, job captain, construction field services, in-house specifications writer, construction contract administrator, progress claim payment certifier and project manager. “This experience has given me the tools to understand design and construction as a continuum of discussions, agreements and decisions,” he explains.

Working mainly in Southern Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver regions, EDGE credits its strength to both its experience in delivering excellence and a collaborative approach to the provision of architectural specification services.
